Website vs Social Media Ads: What Should You Actually Do First?
July 14, 2026 · 4 min read
This is one of the most common questions from a business starting out online, and most of the advice online skips straight to an opinion without explaining the actual reasoning. Here's the reasoning.
Ads without a landing page waste money
Running Google or Meta ads that send people to a bare social media page — or nowhere at all — typically converts worse than sending that same traffic to even a simple one-page site with a clear offer and an obvious way to contact you. If there's no website yet, every euro of ad spend is working harder than it needs to.
A website without traffic is invisible
The reverse is just as true. A well-built new website with zero visitors generates nothing on its own. Organic search traffic to a brand-new site can realistically take months to build up. If a business needs enquiries this month, waiting on SEO alone isn't a realistic plan.
The order that actually works
Get a simple, working website live first — even a single page with a clear offer, a contact form, and a WhatsApp button is enough to start with, and that's realistically a 1–2 day build. Then start ads pointed at that page. This avoids the two most common mistakes: wasting ad spend sending clicks nowhere, and waiting for a perfect website before generating any enquiries at all.
When social content should come first
If a business depends heavily on trust and visible track record — tradespeople, health and beauty, anything hands-on — a few weeks of consistent social content before ads start can genuinely lower your cost per lead. People click through to a profile that already looks active and credible far more readily than one that looks abandoned.
